Open Carry

Ohio is a traditional open carry state, which means people who legally own firearms may carry them in public places, unless there is a specific prohibition against them.

Ohio Law. Ohio enacted a stand your ground law in early 2021, which generally prohibits a court or trier of fact from considering whether a person knew they could have retreated before using deadly force in self-defense when the person using force was in any place they had a right to be

Hollow point bullets

 Ohio has no state or local restrictions on the purchase, possession or use of hollow-point ammunition for general marksmanship and/or self-defense purposes.

AR-15

Ohio has no law restricting assault weapons generally.

Gun Law age

Last updated January 5, 2023 . Ohio law prohibits the purchase of a firearm by any person under age 18, and the purchase of a handgun by any person under age 21. Ohio law also generally prohibits selling or furnishing a firearm to a person under age 18, or a handgun to a person under age 21.

Felons

Under Ohio Revised Code §2923.13, individuals who are under indictment or have been convicted for any violent offense are prohibited from acquiring, having, carrying, or using any firearm.

Ohio does not:

Require a license for the sale of ammunition; Require sellers of ammunition to maintain a record of the purchasers; Prohibit persons who are ineligible to possess firearms under state law from possessing ammunition, although the federal ammunition purchaser prohibitions apply; Prohibit armor-piercing ammunition, although the federal prohibition on certain kinds of armor-piercing ammunition applies; or Otherwise regulate ammunition.
